Invisalign has become a popular alternative to traditional braces for many individuals seeking a straighter smile. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate for this treatment. Factors such as the complexity of your dental concerns, age, and commitment to maintaining aligners play a crucial role.
At Esteem Dental, we take pride in offering personalized Invisalign treatment tailored to each patient’s unique needs. With years of experience in orthodontic care, we understand how to identify the right candidates for Invisalign, ensuring optimal results and patient satisfaction. Whether you have minor alignment issues or more complex concerns, our compassionate team is dedicated to helping you achieve the confident smile you deserve.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?
Just because someone has been referred for orthodontic care does not automatically mean they will be a good candidate for Invisalign. Some may require different treatments, including traditional braces, retainers, or implants. Therefore, a dental provider should perform a full assessment to determine whether you are a good candidate or not.
The following factors describe an individual who is likely a strong candidate for Invisalign or other clear aligners:
- Dental issues that are mild or moderate enough to be treated with clear aligners, such as those related to crowding or gaps
- Good dental hygiene habits
- Strong overall health
- Does not require additional care or have oral cavity problems, such as gum disease, tooth decay, or infection
- Wants to minimize the visibility of orthodontic tools
- Old enough to keep track of the clear trays
- Willing and able to wear aligners for at least 22 hours per day
- Previously wore braces, but teeth have shifted out of place, such as that caused by failing to use retainers
- Does not have other bite or jaw issues, such as TMJ
We encourage you to schedule a consultation with one of our Esteem Dental providers if you need help determining whether you’re a good candidate for a particular orthodontic treatment.
How to Prepare for an Invisalign Consultation
The only surefire way to determine someone’s candidacy for dental or orthodontic treatment is to go in for a consultation. During the consultation, you and your provider will discuss different medical records, goals and expectations, commitment levels required for treatment, and rough timelines for how you can expect your care to go. However, you should come prepared to discuss these topics in greater detail.
It may also be helpful to speak to any referring practitioners who have encouraged you to seek out orthodontic care. In particular, your dental team can send us any relevant X-rays, scans, and other records. If you cannot send us this information, we can also collect these records by taking new images and scans during your visit.
How to Care for Your Invisalign Clear Aligners
There are several things you can implement into daily life that will help you care for your clear aligners, such as:
- Removing your aligners every time you eat or drink something other than water.
- Placing your aligner trays in their travel case when they are not in use.
- Brushing and flossing your teeth after each meal or snack.
- Avoiding abrasives, including denture cleaners, alcohol-based mouthwashes, toothpaste with baking soda, or anything else that may scratch and damage the trays.
- Not cleaning your Invisalign with hot water.
- Using a soft bristle brush.
